This is a special guest post written by Mike Holmes. Lexis is a member of Holmes Approved Homes.

For years, I’ve been sounding the alarm about the skilled trades shortage—and it’s only getting worse. The reality is, we don’t have enough trained professionals in construction, plumbing, electrical, and other essential trades. Fewer young people are entering the trades, and that’s putting the future of construction—and the quality of our homes—at risk. And who pays the price? Homeowners.

On a recent episode of the Holmes on Homes Podcast, I broke down why this shortage is happening, how it’s impacting the industry, and what we need to do to fix it.

What’s Causing the Skilled Trades Shortage?

One of the biggest reasons to the skilled trades shortage is stigma. Too often, people think of trades as a “backup plan” instead of a rewarding, well-paying career. As a result, fewer young people are joining the industry, while experienced tradespeople are retiring at record rates.

How This Impacts Homeowners

With fewer skilled workers available, homeowners face:

  • Longer wait times for renovations and repairs
  • Higher costs due to increased demand
  • Lower-quality work from inexperienced or unqualified contractors

Poor workmanship leads to more repairs, more safety risks, and homes that don’t last. That’s why homeowners need to do their research, hire qualified professionals, and work with reputable builders who prioritize skilled work.

What Needs to Change?

The solution starts with changing the way we talk about the trades. Too often, careers in construction are seen as a “backup plan” instead of a first choice. But the reality? Skilled trades are essential, well-paying careers that offer long-term stability and opportunity.

We need to start respecting the trades as the essential careers they are. This means:

  • Encouraging young people to consider the trades
  • Offering more apprenticeships and hands-on training
  • Hiring and supporting companies that prioritize skilled work

We need more support for trade schools, apprenticeships, and companies that invest in training the next generation. Homeowners can help too, by hiring professionals who prioritize quality and proper training.
